When I was a single mom, my 7-yr.-old daughter and I lived in my friend's basement. I had been single for 6 years and did not plan on being single much longer! So, I did not unpack any of my dishes. I only used plastic. Besides that, the kitchen there was pretty makeshift. There was only a small sink and fridge. But when my boyfriend, now my husband of 10 years, first saw that I washed plastic, he freaked! So, I explained to him that the place was very temporary and besides, it was reducing waste and reusing, right! Well, my husband has teased me many times about it. That was way back before reduce, reuse, recycle was cool. Since then, he has told our children this story many, many times--"Well, when I met your mom, she was washing plastic utensils." So, I could not stop laughing the other day when our 15 year old, (who BTW is my husband's son and my stepson, who lives with us and we don't distinguish it that way) was helping me load the dishwasher. The silverware holder was full and there was no room for the plastic spoon he had in his hand, and he was about to put it in there. I said, "Just throw it away." And he said so shocked, "You mean can do that?"
