First I have to give my mother-in-law credit, she was after all a single mom to 3 young boys, and she's a doctor, so I have no doubt the woman knows what she's doing when it comes to her grandson. However, the day she decided to give my 3-month-old son, Liam, his first bite of roast beef, I almost lost it. Her idea was to give him a little bit to suck on til it was nothing and just let it slide down his throat. I managed to sneak it out of his mouth before he swallowed it (it was really big!) and then slipped into the bathroom to make an emergency call to the pediatrician - at 9pm. He said just make sure his mouth is clear and pay attention for any weird throat noises, but that he would be fine. The worst part was in the car on the way home, I burst into sobs because a) I was scared out of my mind convinced he would choke, b) felt really silly because my mother-in-law is a good grandmother and I always appreciate her advice and I felt bad for being so mad, and c) baby's first meat felt like a big milestone, and I felt like I missed it, so I was mourning the loss of that experience. Even now I fell disappointed when I remember it.
I nearly killed her....
